"New Products - Revolution and ReproCHECK"

"Revolution" The New Flea – Heartworm Medication

"Revolution" is the first topical solution that prevents heartworm disease and also kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching. This brand new product was released in November 1999 and became available in December 1999. You will see many advertisements for "Revolution" in newspapers, magazines, television and the radio. May this article serve to introduce you to the product.

The following information is based on information provided to veterinarians by the Pfizer Animal Health Company. In my clinical experience of using the product in Year 2000, I have had problems with it killing ticks. We have therefore dropped the line and no longer sell the product.

"Revolution" has a wide spectrum of protection against common parasites.

Proving the product

More than 12,000 doses were administered to over 4,500 dogs and cats during the past four years of research.

How it works

"Revolution" is applied to the skin surface in one tiny area, once-a-month, using a convenient, childproof applicator. The active ingredient, selamectin is absorbed through the skin and enters the blood stream. The selamectin in the blood and intestinal tract prevents heartworm disease and kills intestinal parasites (worms). The selamectin then redistributes to the sebaceous (oil) glands of the skin. It’s presence in the sebaceous glands, hair follicles and skin causes the death of fleas, ticks and other ectoparasites by inhibiting nerve impulses. It has no such effect in the mammalian nervous system, so it is much safer than common insecticides.

Simple

"Revolution" is very low volume (teaspoon or less) and only needs to be applied in one spot once every thirty days.

It is non-greasy and dries quickly so you don’t have a mess on upholstery, etc.

Bathing the pet two hours after application doesn’t affect the efficacy.

Available in six different sizes based on the body weight of your pet.

Safety

Safe to use on puppies and kittens as young as 6 weeks of age.

Safe for breeding males and females, pregnant and nursing females and heartworm positive pets.

Was proven safe when given at ten times the recommended dose to puppies and kittens, and five times the recommended dose to collies with sensitivity to ivermectin (used in some other heartworm preventatives e.g. Heartgard).

Child resistant packaging.

Generally well tolerated. In research, less than 0.5% of dogs and cats experienced digestive upset. Approximately 1% of cats experienced temporary hair loss at the application site.

Dosages available

Less than 5# Puppy or Kitten

5 to 15# Cat

5 to 10# Dog

10 to 20# Dog

When will "Revolution" be available?

"Revolution" is now available in all sizes.

My feelings on the product…

Year 2000 has been a very wet year in SE Ohio.  For that reason we have been overrun with ticks in particular.   "Revolution" has NOT done a good job of keeping them off of my patients. For that reason, we have dropped the product from our line and have continued to use and promote Frontline "TopSpot" which does a very good job of killing fleas and ticks.

ReproCHECK the New Canine Pregnancy Test

ReproCheck.JPG (16235 bytes)

We have just learned that there is a new test to detect pregnancy in dogs as early as 21 days after breeding. The test is called ReproCHECK and measures the hormone relaxin which is released when an egg implants into the uterus.

A tiny amount of blood (<1/5 teaspoon) is drawn from a leg vein and processed in the test kit. In less than 20 minutes, your veterinarian can give you reliable results. Unfortunately, there still is not a test which pet owners can perform easily at home, but with advances such as this it may be just around the corner.  In the past, only ultrasound, manual palpation or radiography could be used to detect pregnancy. This is a much less expensive and extremely reliable method to determine the pregnancy status of your favorite dog...

True Friends

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone
wall along one side of the road. It looked like fine marble.

At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight. When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother of pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. When he was close enough, he called out, "Excuse me, where are we?"

"This is heaven, sir," the man answered. "Wow! Would you happen to have some water?" the man asked. "Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up." The man gestured, and the gate began to open. "Can my friend," gesturing toward his dog, "come in, too?" the traveler asked.

"I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets."

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going. After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road which led through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. "Excuse me!" he called to the reader. "Do you have any
water?"

"Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there". The man pointed to a place that couldn't be seen from outside the gate. "Come on in."

"How about my friend here?" the traveler gestured to the dog. "There should be a bowl by the pump."

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were
full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree waiting for them. "What do you call this place?" the traveler asked.

"This is heaven," was the answer. "Well, that's confusing," the traveler said. "The man down the road said that was heaven, too."

"Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope."That's hell."

"Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?"

"No. I can see how you might think so, but we're just happy that they screen out the folks who'd leave their best friends behind."

Warm regards for this week and don't forget to give thanks for the pets that share our lives,
